Some projects need more than a single shoot. They want a season, a year, sometimes longer — the kind of work that can only be made by staying.

Collaborations are how I commit to those. They are open-ended by design: shaped to the work, the partner, and the time the work needs.

The process

Each collaboration is shaped to the work.

A first conversation establishes intent, scale, and timeline. From there we co-write a brief: what we're making, for whom, and over how long.

The work itself unfolds in stages, with regular review and room to change course.

Collaborations are quoted as engagements rather than assignments. Usually retained, sometimes co-funded, occasionally exhibition-driven.

Questions, answered

  • Anything that needs more than a shoot: long-term editorial or documentary projects, books and zines, exhibitions, artist residencies, and cross-disciplinary work with writers, musicians, architects or designers. The common feature is time — a season, a year, sometimes longer.

  • We start with a conversation to clarify objectives, scope and duration, then co-develop a brief. Work runs in phases with regular reviews and room to change course. Financially it can be retained, co-funded, grant-supported or exhibition-supported; each one is quoted individually.

  • I work on both, authored or co-authored. My ongoing project "Almost Nothing", about memory and the Italian countryside, is heading towards a photobook. If you're a publisher, editor or designer with a project in mind, I'd like to hear about it.

  • Yes, with institutions or independent partners. I've proposed residencies in Japan and the Faroe Islands and I'm open to others where the landscape and the time on offer make sense for slow, place-based work.

  • Email luca@lucastefanelli.photography with the idea, the people involved, a rough timeframe and how it might be funded. It doesn't need to be polished. The first conversation is where the shape of the project usually appears.
